At the end of the Second World War, Soviet radio broadcast Schumann’s Träumerei to mark the end of the siege of Leningrad. A German composition, heard amid the ruins left by Germany and later performed by the Russian-born Jewish pianist Vladimir Horowitz, became a testament to music’s promise to recompose history’s contradictions into a higher harmony.
