“The Chronicle of A.M. Bach” by Ken Okiishi

The Chronicle of A.M. Bach stars harpsichordist Jean-Luc Ho, who refuses to play the part of J.S. Bach; Okiishi starts filming his producer, Jeanne Graff, breast-feeding her child while they listen to Ho play Bach on the radio during a dance rehearsal. Movement through this radically suspended time-space invites new relations between social space, listening, and how we experience history, entropy and cohesion.

The artist

Ken Okiishi’s films incite poetic fissures and new possibilities in how we form ideas of ourselves and others: from feedback-loops of translation/migration in (Goodbye to) Manhattan (2010); to a childhood in a “homeland” made perpetually “foreign” in A Model Childhood (2018); to Vital Behaviors (2019), which finds an undoing of social media in a miraculously sensitized re-performance. Vital Behaviors premiered at MoMA Presents, and his films have been shown internationally at Light Industry (NY), Anthology Film Archives (NY), ICA London, Pilar Corrias (London), Museum Ludwig (Köln), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Take Ninagawa (Tokyo), Reena Spaulings (NY).
