“The (Un)event (side c)” by Linn Phyllis Seeger

Gesturing towards prevalent vernaculars of the American road movie, “The (Un)event (side c)” simulates a drive through New York City within a map that becomes the territory. Defying conventional spatial logics, the operation of the scroll only suggests a progress-oriented forward movement while in fact, leading nowhere; and seemingly separate spaces within various interface-architectures proliferate and morph into each other. The (Un)event (side c) is part of a three-channel installation piece that seeks to articulate ‘the event of feeling historical in the present’ (Berlant 2005). Assembled from iPhone-based sound and video footage, The (Un)event generates a sense, or suspicion, of being in close proximity to an imminent, or recently transpired incident of historical scale — while at the same time, watching the sunset from a balcony by the sea, or watching the weather report, or the news, or playing video games, or navigating New York City aimlessly and unsuccessfully, without ever arriving anywhere.

Director’s biography

Linn Phyllis Seeger (she/her) is an artist and PhD candidate at the Royal College of Art in London. Spanning across online media, moving image and installation, her work has been exhibited and screened internationally, including the 17th and 19th Venice Architecture Biennale, The Derek Jarman Lab, Foam Museum, Millennium Film Workshop New York, Kuenstlerhaus Wien, Iklectik, Deutsche Boerse Foundation, and others.

Linn Phyllis Seeger’s two artist books, You I Everything Else (2020) and 0N0E (2022), were published by Skinnerboox. Her work and writing has appeared in Dazed, Autre Magazine, Foam Magazine, and others.

Since October 2021, she is an Associate Lecturer at the Royal College of Art, and has held guest lectures and artist talks at IED Milan, Zurich University of the Arts, London School of Economics, and during Offprint Projects at Tate Modern.
